About Me
Hello, I'm Jarkko Saltiola, also referred by nick name "Jake" or online handle "jasalt". I'm an independent software engineer in Helsinki, Finland. Born and raised at the countryside, I got familiar with PC's (MS-DOS, Win9X), gaming and the early consumer internet via 56k modem from young age.
Being allergic to farm animals and crops it was clear that I was not to become a succession for the family farming business and went to study IT after high school, completing B.Sc. in software engineering from JYU in 2015 with statistics as minor. Since then I have worked on various CMS, E-commerce and ERP projects utilizing WordPress and Odoo platforms, and last few years have started focusing more on custom software solutions such as Django web applications and plugins targeting various platforms.
As an engineer, I enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of technology from the ground up while using pragmatic tools for solving problems at hand. I'm looking to find myself working with high-performing product teams laying code foundations that scale and adapt with future requirements.
I have also been a fan of open-source software since encountering Android and Arch Linux as a teenager and got into maker scene via Hacklab Jyväskylä during studies. Some open-source projects I am proud of having contributed to include Phel (Clojure-like functional language transpiling to PHP), Timber (Twig templating for WordPress) and PHP-WASM.
Other hobbies also include photography, computer music, video production and running.
